La Pura Vida- Day One

Alex and Aira’s wedding weekend took place at the Hotel Hacienda Vista Hermosa in Puente de Ixtla, Morelos, Mexico. The edifice was built in 1529 by Hernan Cortes, and passed through many hands, witnessing centuries of Mexican history before it was opened as a grand hotel in 1947. The setting alone for this beautiful wedding was spectacular, and Aira and Alex’s impeccable taste and style added a whole other level of magnificence.

Mexican Wedding Preparation

Guests began arriving to the Hacienda on Friday during the day, and Friday evening was the Civil Ceremony. Traditionally a legal motion, this night was a whole beautiful production unto itself, with the ceremony taking place in the open air lobby, with a feast of hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and dancing to follow.

Mexican Wedding Celebration

The party was full of theatrical bar tending and great music. By the end of the night the Mexican tradition of pouring tequila straight down people’s throats became the main attraction. I was roped in, and submitted to the tequila initiation in the end.
The party winded down around 5 am, just in time for a nap before the main event on Saturday.

La Pura Vida – Day Two

Day two of Alex and Aira’s wedding celebration began with a slow morning, and sleeping in. Once the peacocks had sung their charming squeals, everyone was awake. The preparations for Saturday’s ceremony and celebration could begin.
Mexican Wedding Details and PeacockAira got ready with her mom, aunts and cousins helping in the master suite. All of her accessories were elegant, and simple. White flowers, white dress, white diamonds- can’t go wrong. Alex and his brother got ready upstairs, and had plenty of time to relax, and check out the great Antique car that he had arranged as the get-a-away vehicle after the ceremony.

Mexican Wedding Details and Antique Car

The religious ceremony took place in the Salon la Troje. The entire space was accentuated with dramatic uplighting and arrangements of white lilies. Guests were greeted and given classic spanish fans to cool themselves  while witnessing the ceremony. Once the marriage was official, Alex and Aira were received with such a tangible outpouring of love, and support from their family and friends.

Religious Mexican Wedding Celebration

Speaking of support, the fantastic Antique car wouldn’t start! So a legion of men got together and pushed the newlyweds around the grounds. As dusk approached, we got some great portraits of the two of them. These first few moments after the ceremony are so magical for capturing that candid love for one another.

Hacienda Portraits

The rest of the evening was planned and executed to perfection. Guests were greeted by a fleet of waiters, armed with hors d’oeuvres as they made their way to the reception tent. As Alex and Aira enjoyed their first dance, they were showered with fireworks on the dance floor, and outside over the swan pond. The entertainment throughout the evening progressed from pyrotechnics to a comedian, and a fantastic Banda performance.

Mexican Extravaganza Party

Everyone danced into the wee hours of the morning to the live music, and the sounds of the master DJ. The couple’s niece surprised them with performing a few great renditions of Selena dedicated to them. The guests enjoyed an extravagant dessert and munchie bar. Alex and Aira’s logo was monogrammed on everything from the napkins, etched in the shot glasses, and projected in lights. This was one non-stop party, with all generations dancing. The night came to a close around 5 am with a twelve piece Mariachi band serenading to the very end. Hey, I realize it’s a Costa Rican saying but man, this is La Pura Vida!

Lauren and Matt’s Jupiter Island Engagement Shoot

I had a wonderful time with Lauren and Matt, gallivanting around Jupiter Island; taking photos, drinking wine, and generally just having a good time amidst the glorious springtime weather.  ’Just received a message from her reading, “These look amazing!!!! :) ”.  Whoa Lauren, that’s a whole lotta exclamation points!  I tell ya, messages like this ratchet up the job satisfaction scale a whole lot.  Definitely looking forward to their upcoming Breakers wedding in Palm Beach, Florida.

B-List Meet and Greet in DC

This past weekend was the B-List Meet and Greet in DC, and I was amped to have the opportunity to shoot this event with my associates Lindsay and Jonathan. The B-List is a consortium of the top Wedding Blogs in the industry, and this party was a great way to meet the folks behind the posts and tweets. It was a fantastic gathering of creative minds, and as you can tell from the photos, there was no shortage of fantastic entertaining ideas. Natalee and Charles

I walked into this small sushi restaurant on South Beach and there he was, the love of my life,” Natalee remembers. “We met on a blind date. Yes, that’s right – a blind date!”

Fast forward three years, Natalee and Charles are celebrating the anniversary of this now legendary first date. The plan was to sample the new Sushi restaurant in town at Le Fontainebleu, so when they got in the elevator and Charles pressed floor thirty-four, Natalee was a little bit suspicious. When they got off the elevator, Charles led her down the hall to the room he had reserved for the night. As he opened the door to reveal the room covered in rose petals, their chihuahua, ChiChi ran out. Natalee smiles, “As I bent down to pick her up, Charles kneels in front of me, takes my hand, and asks me to marry him. He holds up ChiChi and there is an engagement ring hanging from her collar. It was truly perfect.”

As a fourth-generation Floridian, born in Miami, Natalee knew she wanted their wedding to embrace the beautiful locale of their hometown. After looking at other prestigious venues, the couple decided that the island where they lived had the best view. And thus began their vision for wedding on the terrace of AQUA, just below the balcony of their condominium. Natalee describes the community as a modern and tropical paradise, “There is nothing like it anywhere in South Florida.”

Once they found the perfect fit for the location, Natalee set her sights on creating the perfect dress, combining all of her favorite elements from dresses she’d seen in magazines. Charles’ tuxedo was timeless – a classic Armani with velvet peaked lapels. When it came to the ceremony, it was all about family. Natalee was walked down the aisle by her mother, father, and of course – ChiChi. Her grandfather was the officiant.

Both the ceremony and reception areas were designed by Fé Domenech and the Event Firm in Miami. “Fé is extremely creative and worked with us to create an event that was both unique to our personal style and our site,” Natalee recounts. They wanted to keep the reception fun, and allow guests to mingle and get to know each other, so the space was set up with a lounge feel, with a mix of high and low tables. Black and bone were the main colors with Tiffany blue accents.

VWhen it came to food, Natalee and Charles enlisted the help of a knowledgeable friend, Micah Edelstein, a Season 3 Top Chef Contestant and chef/owner of The Wandering Chef Caterers. Natalee says, “When deciding the menu we wanted to keep the location in mind. Micah was the perfect choice to help us create our menu. Stations were set-up around the pool and featured several salads along with stone crab and key lime mustard sauce, seafood paella, and whole roast pork with guava glazed plantains. Guests raved about the food. The Wedding Cake was made by Pam’s Gluten Free Kitchen and was a 3 tier rum cake with canolli cream filling.”

It was custom fitted wedding, perfectly suited for this Miami couple. Natalee, Charles and their guests danced into the night, admiring the waterfront views as the city lights illuminated the horizon.

Morgan and Preston

It was a January night when Preston walked into a school gym, ready to play indoor soccer. However, the moment he saw the opposing team, he was totally distracted by Morgan. He made it a point to get to know her, and they met up at a charity event.  An arch of time passed, and on one evening, the couple went on a walk just before sunset. When they reached the path overlooking Georgetown, Morgan turned to see Preston on one knee.  She squealed, accepted and grabbed him for a big hug. But then they noticed their dog rolling on top of a dead turtle.  Her squeals of joy turned to “No no no!!”   “This would happen to us!” Morgan remembers thinking.

Their playful natures shined through on their wedding day as they laughed alongside family and friends at the unexpected, yet wonderfully memorable moments throughout the day. In Preston’s words, “I enjoy every moment I’m around Morgan, and she makes every day of my life happier and fuller than I ever thought I could be. Now, I get to marry her!”

Morgan’s dress was designed by Sassi Holford, a designer based in London. Once Morgan saw the dress, she immediately fell in love with it.  “I called the New York store and they sent me to a small boutique somewhere in Pennsylvania to pick up the dress. I was more than willing to drive 5 hours to get my dress!” Her shoes were Christian Louboutin with a delicate satin half bow matching her dress and bright red soles. Preston already owned his tuxedo by Joseph Abboud, so Morgan and Preston ordered the groomemen’s tuxedos from the same designer to coordinate. They also purchased paisley ties in shades of blue for the groomsmen and in ivory for Preston. Morgan joked about Preston’s shoes, “ They were Salvatore Ferragamo …. and so handsome I referred to them as the male version of my shoes.”

The couple’s ceremony site was Saints Peter and Paul Church. “I am Catholic and it was important for me to be married in the church. Saints Peter and Paul was a large, newly built church and was absolutely beautiful. The officiant lives next door to my parents in Syracuse, NY and lived there my entire life growing up.” Morgan laughed, “I think the ceremony truly showed our goofy nature when Preston couldn’t get my ring on so he turned to our guests and asked “Excuse me, does anyone have any bacon grease?”

After the ceremony, everyone made their way over to the reception at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina.

Morgan remembers, “We picked this site because it truly allowed us to have a destination wedding while everyone still had the ability to drive. The hotel had everything from water slides, to tennis, a fantastic spa and a beautiful golf course.”
When the couple walked into the ballroom at the Hyatt, they were blown away. Morgan remembered, “Words cannot explain the excitement that we both felt seeing the room and realizing it was even more then we had dreamed.” Morgan described the concept, “We really wanted the reception to be magical like walking into a dark room only lit by twinkling candle light and direct spotlights on each table with large floral arrangements of Calla Lilies. We had every table and chair covered in ivory silk and the walls had draping ivory fabric back-lit by hundreds of small twinkling tea lights.

To start the party, Preston and Morgan danced to the fun, upbeat, “You Are The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontage. Morgan chose this song because, “I have to say that the lyrics to the song are very fitting… Preston is definitely the best thing to ever happen to me!” Everyone joined in dancing after the first chorus, enjoying the music by the Winn Brother’s Band. They played songs that every generation could appreciate and dance to together. {Photographer’s note:  This band was fantastic!  As you can imagine, I’ve seen many wedding bands, but…these fellas are pure energy.}

Morgan said their cake was absolutely delicious, “Each layer was wrapped with a fondant ribbon bow that tiered down the cake. I showed Preston several cakes and was so thrilled when he picked the one with the bows that went with my wedding dress without even knowing!”

MPblog_5The guests also enjoyed a photo booth, where they posed for fun photos. They got one copy for themselves, and one copy for the guest book, to place next to a note for the couple. From the automated photo booth to the photographer, Morgan was very excited about her choices, “Shane was absolutely wonderful to work with. He allowed us to be our goofy, fun selves and took more photos then we could have ever asked for. It was as if every time I wished he was there to catch the moment he was one step ahead of me.” Morgan’s father and Preston ended the evening singing together. Morgan explained, “One of the first experiences Preston had with my family was when they told him he had to sing a solo to get everyone’s approval.  At the end of the reception when all of the guests started chanting “One more song, one more song…” Preston and my dad got on stage and sang You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling a cappella with everyone joining in for the chorus. It was AMAZING!!”

Nattalie and Andrew

Nattalie and Andrew met when they both worked at a private boys school in downtown Toronto. Last year they moved to Connecticut to work for Salisbury School. For the ease of planning and celebrating their new home, the couple decided to host the wedding in Connecticut. Nattalie said, “Choosing our site was very simple—Andrew and I both work and live at Salisbury School. The scenery and views were so picturesque that we couldn’t resist.” Their main goal for the day  throughout the planning process was for everyone to be relaxed and have fun.

NAblog_1

Nattalie’s dress was designed by Anne Barge, and it was purchased from The Plumed Serpent in Westport, CT.  She remarked, “I bought my dress primarily because it had pockets.” And Nattalie sure put those pockets to good use- she had twizzlers and candy corn stashed in the pockets throughout the day.

NAblog_2

The flower girls’ dresses were handmade by Andrew’s mother, Ailix. Nattalie carried a bouquet of cymbidium white orchids and white calla lilies with purple fiddle-heads and Andrew’s boutonniere was a white calla lily.  After the chapel service with majestic views, a very classic Good Humor truck arrived with its typical “circus-esque” music. Nattalie recalled that “Everyone lined up to get an ice-cream treat. The ring-bearer and flower girls might have had two or three…” The couple chose to have this fun food attraction in lieu of a traditional wedding cake.

NAblog_3

The couple kicked off the party to Coldplay’s “Swallowed By The Sea”, which they danced to on one of their first dates. The rest of the night was filled with sounds from a live jazz band. Nattalie knew they were a perfect choice for their wedding once they told her they didn’t do “wedding-themed music”. She laughs, “Everyone, all ages, was up and shaking their money makers! Instead of favors, the couple made a donation to St. Mike’s Hospital in Toronto. Nattalie said that, “St. Mike’s and their amazing team of doctors and surgeons took amazing care of my mother when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. They performed a modern day miracle–she went in for surgery in early June and was dancing at our wedding in August. We wanted to help support the great work that they do there. Dr. Mueller is my family’s hero!”

The night ended with the entire bridal party jumping into the lake. Nattalie laughed that her dress, “Was not only stunning but who knew it would act as a great floatation device!” This crazy ending just seems to make sense for this fun, laid back couple.

Meghan and Kris

Meghan’s family has visited Montauk every summer since she was three years old, so it was the perfect destination for this New York City couple to host a beautifully elegant, and relaxed summer wedding. It seems that many things about this couple are wonderfully simple, and just seem to fit. Meghan bought her dress from Vera Wang- She went to two other stores before she found her dress and never looked back – she knew it was the one.  The search was surprisingly easy.

MKblog_p1

The Roman Catholic church in Montauk is called St. Therese of Lisieux.  For ten years, Montauk had been raising money to rebuild the church.  Finally in the Spring of 2008, the new church was opened.  Meghan and Kris watched the final years of construction and knew they wanted the beautiful church to be the site of their ceremony.  The couple personalized the ceremony by incorporating songs they love, and asking family members to participate in the mass and present readings.   Kris’ aunt also created a personal Prayers of the Faithful for the wedding.  The officiant was Father Edward Byrne, a friend of Meghan’s mother, who travelled from Ossining, New York.

The reception was held at the Montauk Yacht Club.  After spending 20 summers in the town, Meghan had no idea it even existed, but the second Kris and Meghan saw it, they knew it was perfect.  Meghan and Kris said, “It exemplified our wishes for the day – a classic venue with a laid back feel. We chose all aspects of the day around that feeling.  The flowers were classic flowers beautifully matched with candles for a quiet elegance.  Chef Michael Dimitrovich created food representative of Montauk – from the raw bar at the cocktail hour, the passed hors d’oeuvres of tuna and crab stuffed mushrooms to the delicious duo of filet mignon with tamarind demi-glace and Cajun BBQ shrimp.”

MKblog_p3

For the first dance, Meghan and Kris chose Brad Paisley’s “Then”. Meghan’s strong love of country music began when she went away to college in Georgia. Since they’ve been together, Kris has learned to love country music too, and chose this song. Meghan says, “The words describe our relationship perfectly.  Eric Nicholas and his band did an unbelievable job performing this song and we will always remember that dance.”

Kate and Brad

KBblog_1

Kate and Brad’s story begins on a Tuesday night in a DC bowling alley. Though from different states, both moved to the Washington DC area sometime after college, and they happened to be on different leagues playing on the same night. Needless to say, now they play on the same team, called “Ouch My Toe.”

KBblog_2

The entire wedding weekend took place at Kirkland Manor in St. Michael’s, Maryland. Kate was drawn to the venue because it reminded her of growing up on the water in Long Island. The ceremony was held outdoors, officiated by Reverend Paul Winters. Both Kate and Brad wanted the ceremony to be, “Clean, simple, classy and succinct.”

KBblog_3

The Celtic Trio plated traditional Irish music with guitar, pipes and fiddle during the ceremony and cocktail hour. Chef Woody, of the MEBA Calhoon Engineering School, oversaw the food preparation which Kate describes as “Absolutely incredible.” The spread included passed mini lamp chops with pesto, and local smoked rockfish for the cocktail hour, a raw bar with oyster shooters, and a grill with filet mignon and salmon with mango salsa. Kate and Brad chose to have a dessert bar as an alternative to cake, which included homemade chocolate, french macarons, and individual apple pies with vanilla ice cream.

KBblog_4

The couple danced to Van Morrison’s “Someone Like You” for their first dance. They chose it, “Simply because the lyrics are meaningful, we both like Van Morrison’s work, and we also wanted something that would be ours that you don’t hear too often at other weddings.”  All in all, Kate says that the best part of the whole wedding was, “Having all our friends and family in the same place at one time… We couldn’t have asked for more love and support and help from not just our families but from our amazing wedding party and friends as well.”
